Our Staff


The Child Care Center in Norwich has a dedicated, experienced staff. Most of our staff work on site at the Montshire Road location with several off-site teachers leading the after school program at the Marion Cross Elementary School in Norwich.

Nursery Staff

Karla Ilsley first joined the staff at the Child Care Center in 1988.  She has a BA in Elementary Education with a concentration in Early Childhood Education from Castleton State College.  She has worked with all age groups in Center over the years.  She became a Nursery teacher in 1996 where she worked until 2003 when she left the Center.  She rejoined the Nursery team in 2007.
Tom Ballou joined the Nursery team in January of 2017. He has his associates degree in Early Childhood Education and has worked in early care and education around the Upper Valley, as well as in Sweden, for more than 20 years.
Cindy Sanborn has a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. She has worked in schools and child care centers throughout the Upper Valley for over 20 years. She joined the Nursery team in March of 2017.

Red Room Staff

Julie McNally joined the Red Room in September of 2016. Prior to that she worked in early childhood programs in both the Upper Valley and Florida. She is currently enrolled in the Community College of Vermont in an associate’s degree program.

 Yellow Room Staff

Mia Eriksson has a bachelor of arts in education with a focus on Early Childhood Education from Sundsvall University in Sweden. She worked with children in Sweden, Jakarta and Bombay before moving to the United States to raise her family. With her family off to college, she has returned to work with young children, joining the Yellow Room in the fall of 2017.
Jodie Carroll joined the Nursery team in May of 2006 and moved to the Yellow Room in 2008 and the Blue Room in 2014. She comes to us with a background at Head Start and in home based child care. She has a BA in Communication Studies with a strong foundation in early childhood education and sign language from Keene State College.

Blue Room Staff

Olivia Dyke started working at the Child Care Center as a float in May of 2015. Upon completing the state of Vermont Fundamentals in Early Childhood Education course, she moved into a position in Blue Room in June of 2018.
Yolanda Knight became a float at the Child Care Center in October of 2017. She has a B.S. in Human Services. She has worked in many caring professions including several early care and education programs and schools around the Upper Valley for many years. She has been working in the Blue Room as a long-term float since the summer of 2018.

Orange Room Staff

Karen Burdette graduated from Wheelock College with BS in Early Childhood Education. She started working in our Nursery in 1982, where she stayed until she moved to the Orange Room in 2006. Karen wears two hats, she is also the head teacher in the Center.

After School Program Staff

Bill Young, is our site director at the After School program for grades 2nd – 6th at our classroom at the Norwich Congregational Church. Bill has an A.S. in Outdoor Recreation Leadership and has worked with children of all ages at summer camps and ski schools. He moved to the Upper Valley in the summer of 2018 and works mornings with preschoolers at the center before heading over to After School each day.
Mary Magavern has worked with the After School K-1 group since the fall of 2017. She has a M.A. in Education and has worked in many different settings including Thetford Elementary School and Marion Cross School as well as serving on the boards for a number of organizations over the years and around the country.

“Floating” Staff

Fay Weber joined the Red Room team in 2007 and moved to float in the summer of 2008; she came to us from Massachusetts and had been a teacher in the toddler room at the Shrewsbury Children’s Center for six years. Fay has BA from Franklin Pierce College and has Massachusetts certification as a preschool and toddler teacher.
Nici Schmidtke joined the Child Care Center team in Janaury of 2019. Nici has a BA from the University of New Hampshire and has worked in a variety of settings prior to entering the field of early childhood education.

Administrative Staff

Allison Colburn, Executive Director, has a BA in Early Childhood Education from Tufts University Child Study Department and a MS in Nonprofit Management from New England College. She worked as a teacher and assistant director both in the Boston area and in the Upper Valley before she joined the staff at The Child Care Center in Norwich as a program coordinator in 1982. Allison has been the Director of the Center since 1997.
Lisa Lawrence has a BA in Arts in English Language and Literature. She has worked as a paraprofessional in the public schools and has done home care through Vermont Supported Living. She joined the Blue Room team in the fall of 2000 and moved to the office in 2006.
Peter Haubrich, our bookkeeper, is the third member of the office team. Peter has many years of bookkeeping experience; he has been at the Center since 1990.
